Meet Facebook…

When people speak fo the “social media revolution” in the years to come, they may have to be more clear on their meaning.

We’ve all seen that Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc has all made a great impact in our lives.  Easing communication, connecting with old friends, keeping up with new ones, and watching silly cat videos.  Still, it’s easy to say that social media has made the most impact in the Middle East.  A domino effect is happening and it’s all because of this new technology – once thought silly, then a distraction, now dangerous.  Egypt’s recent change in government is a testament to what happens when people connect.

We can only assume that the people of Egypt have not only enthusiastically embraced communication via Facebook, but have really taken it to a new level.  CNN is reporting that one man has named his newborn daughter “Facebook,” in honor of the revolution.  I have a friend who changed her name to B’Ellana after the Star Trek Voyager character, but this is something else altogether!

New Facebook Pages

Late last week, Facebook announced an “upgrade” for pages.  Whereas you or I have a personal “profile,” business, corporations, non-profits and other such entities have pages.  Personal profiles were upgraded to the current standard about a month ago, so the shift for pages was not completely unforeseen.

What does this change mean for you and your company?  Well, several things.  First of course is the new layout, including a somewhat smaller profile photo, and your latest five photos displayed at the top of the profile.  However, probably the most important feature of the new pages is that administrators can now post on the page as either themselves or the “brand.”  Further, admins can assume the identity of their page, “like” other pages, and comment on them under this assume identity.  This is a huge development for viral page growth!
